LA to deploy smart streetlight network with 4G tech

The US city of Los Angeles will deploy 500 SmartPoles over the next 5 years, creating a smart streetlight network to deliver reliable wireless broadband coverage to businesses, visitors, and citizens

In the US, the city of Los Angeles this week announced plans to install hundreds of LED street lights with built-in 4G LTE wireless technology over the next several years.

According to PC Magazine, the city will lease access to the light poles in order that a wireless carrier can use them as secondary cell towers.

The smart streetlight network will be provided by Phillips, which will deploy 100 SmartPoles including built-in small cell technology from Ericsson.

An additional 500 poles will be added to the city’s smart streetlight network over the next four years.

PC Magazine states that Los Angeles is the first city to deploy Philips’ SmartPole streetlights – designed to “deliver enhanced, reliable wireless broadband coverage to businesses, visitors, and citizens,” as well as improve network performance in urban areas.

City mayor Eric Garcetti said: “The analog light pole has evolved right here in Los Angeles.

“LA is a world leader in LED street lights and has more poles than any other city in America. We are now taking advantage of previously untapped real estate to give our streets better broadband connectivity and future-ready infrastructure, while generating revenue for the city.”

Dual-purpose smart streetlight network

The city said through the lease of the smart streetlight network as secondary cell towers for wireless carriers, the project will pay for itself and result in “no cost to tax payers and … hundreds of thousands of dollars of revenue for the city”.

Earlier this year, LA adopted a streetlight management system from Phillips, which allows city officials to remotely control lighting fixtures and monitor the energy use and status of each light.
