Winnipeg, Canada — (METERING.COM) — July 4, 2006 – Manitoba Hydro, Winnipeg’s sole distributor of electricity, has officially begun installing wireless automatic meter reading (AMR) devices for its gas and electric customers.
Although initially a small deployment, Manitoba hopes to have 5,000 electricity and 1,000 gas customers making use of the AMR technology by the end of this year. Over time Manitoba wishes to extend the deployment to nearby regions. The over-arching goal – to have AMR meters throughout the province.
The AMR meters will mean customers now have access to a broad range of services such as flexible rate plans, time-of-use rates, in-home energy use displays, remote electrical service disconnects and reconnects, plus faster response times for power outages.
