Utilities will be able to use the Itron mobile app on the device of their choice, including smartphones, tablets and laptops, for automated meter reading and manual data collection.
The smart energy solutions firm says that the app enables utilities to improve the productivity and efficiency of their mobile workforce while also enhancing employee safety. [US utility awarded for mobile customer engagement tool]
According to a release, the solution is claimed to provide new capabilities, including the ability to capture photographs as a part of the meter-reading process and utilize cloud-based maps on all devices to display route and meter data.
Meter readers can always be connected, which allows supervisors to manage their mobile workforce remotely and easily reassign work. The solution also allows for more accurate data collection with thorough and proven read validation, which ensures accurate bills and satisfied customers. It also improves safety with multiple methods to warn employees of hazards, including audible and vibration warnings.
Wendy Lohkamp, senior director of solutions marketing for Software and Services at Itron, said: “[We have] a deep understanding of our utility customers’ data collection needs. As smart devices become more common in the workplace, we wanted to extend our expertise to these platforms.
“The mobile app enables data to be captured in ways that weren’t possible before, making field operations more efficient.”

Since 2009, CenterPoint Energy has reportedly saved over 1.6 million gallons of gasoline, avoided 14,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions and avoided vehicle trips through more than 16 million automated customer service orders. It has also saved over $107 million in operations and maintenance through prevented loss from electricity theft and reduced meter reading, fleet and equipment costs.
