Modesto Irrigation District opts for smart meters

Modesto, CA, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — July 9, 2008 – The Modesto Irrigation District in California will replace its existing electric meters with smart meters in order to reduce consumption and improve energy efficient practices.

The utility has decided to implement measures such as time-of-use tariffs in order to smooth demand by encouraging customers to move consumption to off-peak hours wherever feasible. In addition customers will benefit from the remote meter reading function, which will ensure bills that reflect actual rather than estimated usage.

The MID has over 112,000 electric accounts; it expects the conversion to be completed during 2009.
