More AMR gas modules for US utility

Reading, PA, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — September 6, 2006 – UGI Utilities, which serves 369,000 natural gas and electric customers in eastern and central Pennsylvania, has signed a contract with Itron Inc. for the initial deployment of 133,000 gas modules by the end of 2007.

The utility already has close to 100,000 electric and gas meters automated with Itron’s AMR technology. At present UGI Gas has AMR gas modules installed on difficult-to-access meters only, and the utility alternates between reading meters and estimating bills every other month. It plans to deploy AMR in phases, with the eventual aim of automating its entire system.

Peter Terranova, vice president of operations at UGI Utilities, says: “Automatic meter reading is a key part of our strategy to enhance customer service and maximize operating efficiency.” UGI recently acquired PG Energy, increasing customer numbers by some 158,000. PG Energy also uses Itron’s Mobile AMR system, which should bring even more efficiency to the utility by enabling monthly meter reads, thus eliminating estimated bills and improving customer relations.
