PG&E to acquire more than one million GE meters

Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) has selected more than one million GE Energy I-210 solid state residential meters and kV2c polyphase meters, which will be equipped with automatic meter reading (AMR) technology, for installation as part of its SmartMeter™ programme.

Under the programme, some meters currently in service will be retrofitted, while a large portion will be replaced with new GE Energy equipment. The utility provides gas and electric service in northern and central California, and the meters, which will be equipped with Distribution Control System Inc. (DCSI) transponders for remote reading, collection and transmission, will be installed throughout PG&E’s service area.

PG&E’s SmartMeter programme, which will see the installation of 10.3 million smart meters over the next five years, was launched in the California town of Bakersfield last November.
