Remote payment systems benefits utilities and consumers

SEDC, an IT company serving the electricity utility industry, will begin marketing its Remote Payment System (RPS) to utilities in an effort to offer customers more convenient payment options and at the same time reduce utilitiesí¯¿½ high costs of collecting payments. The RPS product consists of a low-cost payment terminal installed at retail stores and service outlets anywhere in a utilityí¯¿½s territory. Consumers using the remote terminal í¯¿½ similar in size to a credit card processing machine í¯¿½ will be able to access their account information and pay their utility bill using cash, a cheque, credit or debit cards or eChecks.

The terminals are unattended, and collect and process payments in real time. Future developments to the system include adding a pre-paid metering option for utilities to use on problem accounts.
