SCE expands energy storage portfolio


The partnership falls under efforts by SCE to test the ability of energy storage in stabilising its grid.

SCE plans to use the pilot to increase the amount of energy capacity generated from clean energy sources to meet environmental stipulations on carbon emissions.

Under the pilot, NEC Energy Solutions will install its GSS energy storage solution for the utility firm. The solution will include a 3MW/3.4MWh battery energy storage system.

The solutions provider will install its AEROS control software for remote control of the energy storage system.

In a press statement, SCE said it will use the AEROS software to remotely order the system to store energy during off-peak periods and supply it into the grid network when power demand is high.

R&D of energy storage solutions

Efforts to ensure energy storage becomes a fundamental part of the grid continue to increase in the US.

In mid-September, US Department of Energy (DoE) issued $37 million in funding to improve research and development of energy storage solutions.

The DoE said the funding aims to ensure adequate supply of electricity for grid reliability and will be used to develop innovative energy storage solutions which would support increased adoption of renewable energy sources.

In addition to ensuring grid security, the capital will allow local energy storage technology providers to play their role in reducing carbon emissions. [California utility meets demand with 30MW storage system].

The grant will fund 16 energy storage innovation projects under the DoE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).

ARPA-E will issue the funding under its Integration and Optimisation of Novel Ion-Conducting Solids (IONICS) programme.

The IONICS programme will focus on enhancing energy storage and conversion technologies in the transportation, grid and fuel cell sectors.
