In Europe, a consortium led by US semiconductor company Semtech has developed a low-power, wide area network Internet of Things (IoT) application aimed at utilities, urban planning, and infrastructure management.
Semtech will integrate its LoRa RF technology in a large low-power, wide-area network (WAN) deployed by French mobile network operator Bouygues Telecom, in partnership with French communications company Sagemcom, according to a news report by MarketWatch.
The three companies will work together to deploy millions of connected LoRa-based sensors located throughout urban and rural areas.
The network will manage, monitor and control traffic, parking and lighting conditions in smart cities, energy usage in buildings and provide early warning alerts in the event of fires, floods and other extreme weather.
LoRa network early adopters
Two global companies, Schneider Electric and transport infrastructure company Colas Group, have plans to employ the wide-area network solution as part of Issy Grid project France (Schneider Electric).
France’s Colas Group also plans to use LoRa floor sensors to identify vacant parking spaces in the city.
Mohan Maheswaran, CEO of Semtech, said: “Bouygues Telecom’s rapid network expansion demonstrates the confidence they have in deploying a LoRaWAN-based network for commercial use.
“We believe this network will provide a solid platform for the delivery of smart new IoT products and services from commercial service providers and members of the LoRa Alliance.”
The Bouygues Telecom’s IoT network was deployed in Grenoble, a city in the southeast of France. Bouygues’ anticipates that the network will cater to approximately 40% of France’s population – with full rollout expected to be complete by the end of the year.
