Smart grid: US Entergy awarded top honour for low-income consumer engagement


Entergy, a US integrated energy company, based in New Orleans, has won the International Smart Grid Action Network’s first-ever ISGAN Award of Excellence for its project to engage 4,700 low-income consumers to use advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) to better manage their energy consumption.

Entergy’s SmartView AMI pilot was selected from 40 nominations from 15 countries to the competition, which focused on consumer engagement and empowerment.

Entergy New Orleans’ staff, the New Orleans City Council, and community organisations worked together to introduce AMI technology, educate participants, produce energy savings, and provide a platform for the implementation of future smart grid technologies.

Consumers were invited to participate in a variety of demand-response programmes, including initiatives that provide rebates for reducing energy use during peak periods and that reduce air conditioning use.

Approximately 80-90 per cent of the programme participants believed the program saved them money on their energy bills, and more than 90 per cent expressed interest in participating on a permanent basis, the energy company confirmed.

Dr. Michele de Nigris, Chair of ISGAN’s Executive Committee, said: “The Award of Excellence marks the SmartView AMI pilot as a leading example of consumer engagement and empowerment around the world.

“It demonstrates an approach that other organisations could use to successfully engage with their consumers.”

The awards, given in conjunction with the Global Smart Grid Federation (GSGF) at the fifth Clean Energy Ministerial in Seoul, Korea, also recognised a second project – Denmark’s Østkraft Holding AS’ Ecogrid as well as eight additional projects as finalists.
