Sacramento, CA, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — July 22, 2009 – Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has awarded the contract to supply all of the planned 620,000 smart meters for use in the deployment of its advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) to Landis+Gyr.
Under the agreement, SMUD, the sixth largest community-owned electric utility in terms of customers served, plans to deploy Landis+Gyr’s FOCUS® family of smart meters for residential, industrial and commercial customers throughout its service area. Smart metering solutions, expected to revolutionize energy management and grid reliability, provide a two-way flow of data between customer meters and utility back-end systems.
"This is the first step in modernizing the electric grid for Sacramento," said SMUD general manager and CEO, John DiStasio. "Building the smart grid using Landis+Gyr’s robust meter technology offered us the best value in opening the door to the many improvements that will help customers use energy more efficiently and better manage their electricity bill.”
Landis+Gyr’s electric meter contract is part of SMUD’s AMI rollout that recently received regulatory approval. Landis+Gyr will work on the project with Silver Spring Networks, provider of the communications solution.
