SRP wins NERO energy- efficiency award

Washington, DC and Phoenix, AZ, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — July 2, 2008 – U.S. energy company Salt River Project (SRP) has won the 2008 National Energy Resources Organization’s (NERO) Energy Efficiency Award, which recognizes programs and activities that promote and enhance energy efficiency. The award was given for SRP’s M-Power initiative, the largest electricity prepayment program in North America and a popular option for Salt River Project customers who tend to more closely monitor their energy usage

Debbie Kimberly, SRP’s manager of energy efficiency and policy analysis, said SRP electric customers enrolled in the M-Power program typically experience an annual reduction in household energy consumption of about 12 percent, or 1,750 kilowatt-hours (kWh). As a result, the entire class of M-Power customers currently saves 84 gigawatt-hours (gWh) per year and has saved 375 gWh since 2000.

More than 50,000 SRP customers currently use M-Power, and another 10,000 more customers per year are expected to be added during the next five years. Kimberly said customers say they like being able to monitor their power usage, and that it makes them more aware of the amount of energy they use.

"Our M-Power customers say they like to be able to pay at their own pace without the pressure of a monthly electric bill," she said. "The program is not just about energy efficiency, it’s about customer satisfaction. Surveys show that 90 percent of M-Power customers are highly satisfied with the program."

The in-home display used in SRP’s M-Power program "is what makes electricity tangible to our customers," said Kimberly, who accepted the award Tuesday for SRP. "These customers are more aware and conscious of the energy they use, and, as a result, they have more control over their energy bills. Credit for this award goes to SRP customers, who conserve energy on the M-Power program, and to the many SRP employees who help make the program such a success and a model for others in our industry."

The NERO awards program recognizes individuals and organizations in the U.S. who have made a commitment to energy efficiency. NERO is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization whose mission is to engage individuals and groups in dialogue on energy issues, recognize outstanding achievements in the advancement of energy policy, public outreach, innovation and distinguished service, and promote public awareness. NERO is a collection of trade associations and companies representing all aspects of the energy industry. SRP is the third-largest public power utility in the nation, serving more than 935,000 electric customers in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.
