Washington, DC, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — June 15, 2011 – The Smart Meter Manufacturers’ Association of America (SMMAA) has been established by America’s major meter manufacturers as a non-profit organization with a focus on smart meter advocacy and education.
In particular the Association will promote thought leadership and improve awareness in relation to smart meter standards, implementation, legislation, manufacturing and other relevant subjects, offering information and insight based on the members’ collective experience and knowledge.
The founder members, which together account for nearly 100 percent of the installed base of electric meters currently deployed in the U.S. and Canada, and 35 million of which are considered “smart,” are Echelon, Elster, GE, Itron, Landis+Gyr, and Sensus. Representatives from each company reside on the board, with a rotation in the presidency.
“Because the smart meter is such a foundational component of the evolving intelligent grid, we see the need to better inform industry stakeholders, from regulators and legislators to media and consumers, about smart meters and smart grid benefits,” commented David Elve, vice president of industry solutions at Sensus, and the Association’s first president. “Our group is collaborating on top-of-mind subjects and creating a unified voice with the goal of moving the industry forward through policy. While our companies are competitors for utilities’ smart meter business, in the area of public policy we stand on common ground in our desire for well reasoned smart grid regulation and incentives to advance the market.”
Other members of the board are Ed Gray, vice president of regulatory affairs at Elster, Dan Pfeiffer, director of regulatory affairs at Itron, Elizabeth McCoy, strategic marketing manager at GE, and H. Ward Camp, vice president of regulatory and environmental policy at Landis+Gyr, who are the vice presidents, and Larry Colton, NES marketing manager at Echelon, who is secretary/treasurer.
