Discussions at Smart Energy International’s Smart Metering West Coast will include an update on activities and developments in Ontario’s Smart Metering Initiative.
The province of Ontario has set ambitious targets for energy conservation and renewable energy generation, with targets, as part of its goal of creating a “culture of conservation”, of 15,700 MW of renewable sources and demand reduction of 6,300 MW. An integral part of reaching this overall goal is the installation of smart metering technology. Ontario will see the target 800,000 smart meters – and probably more – installed by the end of this year, expanding to 4.5 million province-wide by 20l0. Linked with time-of-use pricing, smart meters will provide the vital backbone of information for utilities, customers and other key stakeholder groups.
The event will provide the opportunity to hear what Burlington Hydro and other local distribution companies are doing on the path to universal smart metering in the province, and to learn from interesting smart metering examples from new home installation to existing condominium retrofits. There will also be review of the regulatory and policy framework that is driving this initiative.
The 2nd Smart Metering West Coast conference takes place in Los Angeles, CA from August 20-22, 2007 and will highlight the latest technologies currently being implemented in the rollout of smart metering in the US.
