The funding includes $1.05 million in loan and $350,000 in grant funds to upgrade utility’s existing water management infrastructure with modern equipment and technology.
According to a local publication, the utility company serving 6,100 water consumers in five counties in Tennessee will use the money to purchase a new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System.
The system is expected to help Watts Bar Utility District to automate management of its distribution network.
The technology will allow the utility to remotely operate its water plant and control booster stations based on water levels.
The water company secured the loan through the USDA’s StrikeForce for Rural Growth and Opportunity programme. The project aims to curb poverty by improving access to basic needs through increased investments in rural communities.

Water management in the US
The news comes a week after water management solutions firm Fathom was selected by Hillsborough town in North Carolina to improve operations of town’s utility department.
The solutions provider said it will provide the town with multiple water management technologies on a single platform to help the town’s water department increase its revenue collection and customer service.
In addition, the integrated solution will help water consumers better manage water usage to lower bills through provision of real time consumption data.
The water management suite comprises Fathom’s customer information system and meter data management to manage the town’s billing, revenue and advanced metering services. [Pennsylvania town okays shift to digital water meters].
Fathom claims that the town’s water department will have access to 720 readings per meter per month by deploying the solution.
Deployment of the technology is expected to last until the end of 2016.
