US wireless smart grid company Nighthawk has lifted the curtain on a new module for use in GE Digital Energy’s residential ANSI electricity smart meters.
The RD960, which is an extension of RDM960/RDL960 products, has been developed for use in GE I-210 meters.
Commenting on the collaboration with GE Digital Energy, Charles Kitowski, CEO of Nighthawk Solutions, said: “We are extremely pleased to be working with GE and their I-210 meters, … one of the most widely deployed smart meters in North America.
“Our primary goal is to develop a product that will be able to seamlessly work along with the meter offering the broadest and most competitive range of solutions for utilities nationwide.”
Mesh-cellular smart grid solutions
The new module aims to allow utilities to take advantage of Nighthawk’s WebConnect software platform and radio frequency (RF) solution to tap into a range of smart grid functions such as remote connect/disconnect, time of use, tamper and outage notification, and off-cycle reads.
Nighthawk’s mesh-cellular solutions are available for electric, water, and natural gas utilities and can be deployed on a targeted or system wide basis.
Using 2.4 GHz mesh technology, utilities can manage their system with a limited number of cellular gateway points and this technology will also allow utilities to talk to demand response points and other mesh devices.
Nighthawk, a subsidiary of McWane, a large water distribution company in North America, said the mesh-cellular radio solution RDG960 series meters can be installed anywhere in the utilities’ territory without any infrastructure build out or maintenance.
The solution also allows energy companies to create clusters of of advanced meters or a system-wide deployment while lowering the cost of both the hardware and communications expenses.
