US manufacturer Sensorex has created a smart water meter that allows field workers to gather data on water quality using a smart phone or tablet.

The SAM-1 Smart Aqua Meter is compatible with Apple mobile devices and with Android from May 2014 to measure and record pH, oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity and temperature values.

The SAM-1 plugs into a headphone jack and connects to Sensorex smart analytical sensors for measurement. The SAM-1 App, available as a free download, recognises the smart sensor type and calibration data.

The interface aims to make taking measurements and managing data simple and error-free, eliminating handwritten logs and potential for transcription errors.

Time, date, and GPS location are automatically recorded with each reading and users may add location name and additional comments.

Readings can be shared instantly via email or exported to a spreadsheet for analysis and record retention.
