TECO Peoples Gas has reached a new milestone by connecting its 400,000th natural gas customer.

Peoples Gas was launched in 1895 to power street lights in Tampa, using gas manufactured from coal.

The gas utility now operates more than 13,400 miles of natural gas distribution pipelines and more than 160 miles of transmission lines.

In 2017, it received approval from the Florida Public Service Commission to become the first utility in Florida to offer waste-to-energy services where biogas from wastewater treatment plants, landfills or agricultural processes can be captured and cleaned to be a pipeline-quality fuel.

The increase in customers registering with Peoples Gas is owing to businesses and homes preferring low-carbon energy resources in a bid to address climate change and to reduce their energy costs.

Peoples Gas has for the seventh year in a row been ranked highest in customer satisfaction among midsized natural gas companies in the south region in the J.D. Power 2019 Gas Utility Residential Customer Satisfaction Study.

The gas utility was named the Most Trusted Utility in the nation for the fifth consecutive year in the 2019 Cogent Syndicated Utility Trusted Brand & Customer Engagement: Residential study by Escalent.
