Mallorca is set to be the first European island to implement a full green hydrogen ecosystem in the EU funded project Green Hysland.
The five-year project, which launched in January, is targeting the generation, distribution and use at least 300 tonnes of renewable hydrogen locally per year, produced from local solar energy.
Six deployment sites are envisaged on the Balearic island, with 7.5MW of hydrogen electrolysis capacity connected to local solar PV plants and six end-user applications, including powering buses and rental vehicles, combined heat and power applications at commercial buildings, electricity supply for port operations and the injection of green hydrogen into the local gas grid.
The intention is to facilitate full integration and operational interconnectivity of all these sites.
As such, the project will deliver infrastructure including a dedicated hydrogen pipeline, road trailers and a hydrogen refuelling station for distributing the hydrogen across the island and integrating the supply with the local end-users.
Project Green Hysland is unique in its approach to bring together the three core elements of the green hydrogen value chain, i.e. production, distribution and end use across the key sectors of mobility, heat and power.
The €20.5 million (US$25 million) project, supported with a €10 million contribution from the EU under the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, also is a major initiative for the region and should form the basis for the first green hydrogen hub at scale in southern Europe.
The project also is expected to inform the decarbonisation of Europe’s island economies, with the intention to enable scalability and replicability through a roadmap to 2050.
Replication islands include Tenerife in Spain, Madeira in Portugal, Aran in Ireland, Ameland in the Netherlands and the Greek Islands.
Green Hysland is being coordinated by the Spanish energy company and system operator Enagas.

“Thanks to the 30 entities that are part of the consortium, the entire value chain is represented in the project, which ensures both the deployment of infrastructure for the production of green hydrogen and its use in final applications.”
Green Hysland aims to reduce Mallorca’s carbon emissions by up to 20,700t per year by the end of the project.
