Defining Smart Metering and planning for the future

Conference: Smart Metering Canada
Presenter: Frits Bruggink
Abstract: Presented by Frits Bruggink at Smart Metering Canada 2007.

The resistance of AMR proponents to the metering industry’s progression from AMR to AMI and smart metering has resulted in confusion as to what smart metering really is and what it can deliver.  This presentation will detail the differences between AMR and AMI with a focus on smart metering and its advantages as well.

Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of the near and long term benefits of AMI and true smart metering solutions and the shortcomings of AMR solutions that seek to obscure the differences between AMR and AMI.

In addition, the presentation will reference the experiences of several smart metering projects from around the world. These projects include ones from innovative utilities, Nuon in The Netherlands and Vattenfall in Sweden, that are taking the lead in moving toward true smart metering systems for their residential customers.

The presentation will provide expanded information associated with the following items:

  • Technology transitions
  • Defining AMI and Smart Metering
  • Identifying AMI services and applications
  • Regulatory and business influences
  • Identifying stakeholder benefits
  • Real world experiences from several Smart Metering deployments
  • Benefits from open AMI platforms
  • Future direction for AMI (and how decisions should be based on existing and future needs)

Attendees will leave this session with a solid understanding of AMI and Smart Metering.

They will learn about the advantages and capabilities of next generation AMI systems and which services they will be able to offer today as well as in the future.

They will appreciate the importance of Utilities future proofing their AMI systems and making the best long-term decisions to benefit all stakeholders including their customers and shareholders.

Attendees will hear how AMI provides opportunities to reduce costs, improve efficiencies, generate new sources of revenue, improve quality of service and solidify customer loyalty.
