MDM functions: objectives, approaches, and emerging standards

Abstract:Presented by James Pace at Smart Metering West Coast 2006. "MDMS" is a category of software only recently created. This presentation describes the underlying assumptions regarding the valid need for MDMS software, clarifies the core functions of an MDMS, and asserts what problems an MDMS does and does not solve.

Further, this presentation will submit that while an MDMS is an essential layer of abstraction for managing multiple AMI vendors, it is not sufficient to stop there. In order to realize true vendor independence and endpoint (meter, AMI communications modules) commoditization, true standards and, most importantly, interoperability are required for the utility industry for RF, low-speed PLC, and BPL media.
