G3-PLC Alliance

The G3-PLC Alliance has taken a lead by developing the next hybrid generation PLC standard incorporating radio frequency (RF) capabilities.

The G3-PLC Hybrid is the first industry hybrid standard offering extended capabilities for smart grid and IoT applications in one seamlessly managed network over both media.

The G3-PLC Alliance is pleased to announce the successful G3-PLC Hybrid plugfest event which has demonstrated interoperability among multiple G3-PLC Hybrid solution providers.

Operated by Trialog in Paris, this remarkable achievement exhibited the correct implementation of the G3-PLC Hybrid standard and accomplished seamless communication among the chipsets from 5 leading international manufacturers (Microchip, Renesas, STMicroelectronics, Semitech Semiconductor, VertexCom Technologies).

Marc Delandre, chairman of G3-PLC Alliance, says, “Several G3-PLC Alliance members already developed their own, proprietary hybrid PLC & RF solution based on G3-PLC technology. Some of these have already been implemented in the field and showed good results.

“Therefore, the concept has already been proven successful and because of the clear demand from the market, G3-PLC Alliance has developed a standard for PLC & RF hybrid communication. Interoperability has been demonstrated now and we will soon extend our successful certification programme for G3-PLC to include G3-PLC Hybrid.”

The hybrid protocol stack is built using open standards IEEE 802.15.4-2015 in addition to the existing ITU-T G.9903 G3-PLC protocol. Each device in the mesh network can use PLC as well as RF for communication.

Depending on the actual conditions in the field, messages between two devices are sent over the ‘best’ available channel. The channel selection for each link in the network is done automatically and adjusted dynamically. This way, the hybrid profile can provide a more efficient and cost-effective solution for smart grids, smart cities and industrial applications.

Furthermore, it opens up new use cases as it extends the connectivity of G3-PLC to RF-only devices. The G3-PLC Hybrid profile is fully compatible and interoperable with existing G3-PLC implementations, so it is possible to mix hybrid and non-hybrid nodes.

“Now that the specification for the hybrid profile has been finalised, the G3-PLC Alliance is working hard together with its members to extend the G3-PLC certification program to include the hybrid PLC & RF profile. We are confident the certification for the hybrid profile will open in the fourth quarter of this year and the first certified hybrid devices will be available soon after,” said Leon Vergeer – G3-PLC Alliance General Secretary.
