The awards form part of the revamped Initiate! Programme, which is dedicated entirely to bringing about change and encouraging growth within the utility industry through innovation, passion and diversification. The Startup and Young Talent awards aim to recognise the best ideas, talent and innovations within the smart energy sector.
The finalists for the Initiate! Startup Award were selected from a total of 60 start-ups worldwide and include BeeBryte, Discovergy, PlugSurfing, SolarChange and Sympower. They will be cross-examined in a live Dragons’ Den-style pitch on the Initiate! main stage on the 15th November and the winner will be chosen by four judges from across the industry.
Young Talent Award
The Young Talent programme invites 200 university and post grad students to join the discussions during the three-day event. Five finalists have been chosen out of 100 entries to compete in the Young Talent Award, which includes writing an abstract on “What’s required to reach a new energy future and the 2030 renewable targets?” The winner will be announced during the award ceremony and will receive a complimentary flight and summit pass to EUW 2017 in Amsterdam, along with two tickets to the prestigious European Utility Industry Awards.
Sietske Jacobs, project manager for Initiate!, said: “There is a big paradigm shift happening within the energy sector, with new technological advances needed to keep up with sustainable targets, regulation and changing consumer needs. It is therefore important for the more established professionals and utilities to look to fresh new talent and innovation, to gain even smarter ideas and bring them to the fore. If current and future talent can work together it will push the industry forward and quickly bring about much needed developments.”
