The European Network of Transmission Operators for Electricity drafted a roadmap to help grid operators to address their challenges through research and innovation.According to European Network of Transmission Operators for Electricity (ENTSOE), the research and Innovation activities included in the roadmap aim to help energy distribution, transmission and storage companies meet their functional objectives.
The roadmap was developed in partnership with EDSO for Smart Grids and EASE with the aim to help TSOs integrate new players including storage and ICT companies and prosumers into their operations.
The roadmap is an update of the organisation’s previous edition which provided grid operators with a research and innovation framework to follow between 2013 and 2022.
The R&I Roadmap 2017-2026 is in line with the European Commission’s Integrated Roadmap and shifts from a technology-driven approach to a challenge-driven approach.
The paper helps grid operators address the three dimensions of innovation – technology, process and business model.
According to the whitepaper TSOs need to implement the Vertical Cooperation model in order to succeed in their research and innovation initiatives.
ENTSOE says no single TSO will be able to succeed alone unless they work together and collaborate with universities, research institutes, industrial manufacturers, DSOs, generation companies, market actors and consumers.
