In India, the Electricity Department of Puducherry has released a tender to launch a smart grid pilot project in the Union Territory of India in the east of the country.

The project involves supply, installation, testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance of 34,000 smart meters including a meter data acquisition system, meter data management system, peak load management and associated hardware and software.

The tender comprises a two-part bidding process on an e-procurement platform with a pre-bid meeting at 10h30hr on 2 July, 2015.

The due date for online submission of tenders is 22 July, 2015 at 11h00.

The technical bid of the tenders received will be opened on the same working day at 15:30hrs.

Smart grid India

In October 2013, after a successful first phase, Puducherry’s expanded a smart grid pilot from 1,400 smart meters up to 87,000 smart meters.

The trial – the first smart grid trial to have been introduced in India – was implemented by the Puducherry Electricity Department and the Power Grid Corporation of India,  involved over 50 service providers.

In May 2015, the Indian government approved the creation of a national smart grid organisation that will see the country investing US$210 million (Rs.980 crore) into planning, monitoring and implementing grid modernization up until 2017.

The government signed off the National Smart Grid Mission last Thursday with Power Minister Piyush Goyal confirming that the budget for the 12th plan from 2012-17 is US$210 million with a budgetary support of US$72 million (Rs.338 crore).
