General Description

The 73S8009R is a versatile, very low-cost, single smart card interface IC, compliant to the requirements of ISO-7816-3, EMV 4.1 (EMV2000) and GSM 11-11 electrical specifications. It is available either in a standard SO28 package, or in a 20-pin QFN package (4 x 4 mm), the latter making it the smallest smart card interface IC available today in the market. It can be used in conjunction with any host microcon-troller that can support the smart card protocol layer. Like the other members of Teridian’s 73S80xxR smart card interface family, the 73S8009R integrates a Low Drop-Out (LDO) voltage regulator that generates the card power supply (VCC) from a nominal power supply source (VPC) of 5V. Digital circuitry is separately powered by a digital power supply VDD, typically 3.3V, which is independent from the 5V supply of the LDO regulator. The LDO exhibits improved noise performance when compared to typical step-up converter based ICs, which generate a lot of undesired noise and ripple causing problems when trying to comply with applicable standards. The LDO architecture also allows the 73S8009R to feature a capability of up to 90mA provided to the card, while offering the lowest power dissipation compared to other existing ICs. Finally, the LDO regulator IC solution, with only one external capacitor, makes the 73S8009R the most cost effective solution for high-volume smart card readers in consumer electronics applications such as set-top-boxes, digital TVs, or personal video recorders.


  • Card Interface
    • Complies with ISO-7816-3 and EMV 4.1 and GSM-11-11 Specifications
    • Provides at least 90mA to the card
    • LDO voltage regulator provides 1.8V/3V/5V to the card from an external power supply input
    • Card activation / deactivation:
      • In normal operating mode, and for a maximum flexibility for the designer, the host controller is responsible for the card activation / deactivation
      • A built-in ISO-7816-3 emergency sequencer deactivates the card upon hardware fault:
      • Card removal
      • Voltage supervision faults: Detection of voltage drops on VCC (card), VDD (digital) and VPC (regulator) power supplies
      • Adjustable power supply (VDD) fault detection (2 resistors needed)- Card over-current (true current detection)
      • Die over-heating fault
    • Card clock: up to 20MHz (or 27MHz at non-ISO7816 duty cycle condition)
    • 2 card detection inputs, 1 for each possible user polarity
    • Auxiliary I/O lines, for C4 / C8 contact signals
  • System Controller Interface
    • 3 Digital inputs control the card voltage / activation / deactivation and card reset
    • 1 Digital input for the card clock
    • 2 Digital outputs (interrupt), allows the system controller the card presence / faults and the status of the 73S8009R (Ready signal)

    • LDO Regulator (VPC):
      • 4.75V to 5.5V
      • 3.0V to 5.5V (if 1.8V and 3V cards only must be supported.)
