Actaris, provider of meters and associated systems for electricity, gas, water and heat markets, and Vodafone Sweden, a company offering an extensive range of mobile telecommunications services, have signed an agreement which delivers a complete automatic meter reading package to utilities. The package, to be launched into the Swedish market shortly, is designed to communicate meter data via GPRS and will include meters, communication services and easy-to-integrate software for operational system and project management.
New regulations introduced in Sweden require all meters to be read monthly by 2009, resulting in utilities investing in new meters and systems. Actaris already has a strong presence in the Swedish market, using both PLC and RF technologies. Industry players are, however, recognising that GPRS has the potential to become a dominant technology in the field as the practical and life cycle costs of AMR system ownership become better understood.
