Bob Shapard to chair GridWise Alliance

Bob Shapard, chairman and CEO of Oncor, has been announced as the new chairman of the Board of Directors of the GridWise Alliance, the Washington, DC-based industry association advocating for a smarter grid.

The appointment, effective immediately, is for a two-year term.

Shapard succeeds Guido Bartels, general manager of Global Energy and Utilities for IBM, who has served as the Alliance chairman since January 2007, and also was recently elected chairman of the Global Smart Grid Federation, an international body established by the GridWise Alliance and six other national smart grid organizations.

Shapard assumed his present role with Oncor in April 2007, and under his leadership the company has quickly become one of the nation’s leaders in deploying advanced grid technologies, including deployment of more than 1.5 million advanced meters, hundreds of smart meters and other equipment.

Prior to joining Oncor, Shapard served as a strategic advisor with EFH Corporation. Between March and October 2005, he was chief financial officer of Tenet Healthcare Corporation, and earlier from 2002 he was executive vice president and chief financial officer of Exelon Corporation. Prior to that assignment, Shapard held a number of other leadership roles with energy companies.

“I am honored to represent a Board of Directors that reflects the diversity of advanced grid stakeholders and whose knowledge and insight comes from years of serving at the highest levels of management,” said Shapard. “I look forward to working with our talented Board and all private and public stakeholders to promote a sustainable energy future.”

In other changes at the GridWise Alliance, the president of the organization for the past two years, Katherine Hamilton, has announced her departure. A search for a CEO is under way.
