Dr Ignacio Campino, formerly head of Sustainability and Climate Protection at Deutsche Telekom, has joined the management team as a director of the DESERTEC Foundation.
In this role, Campino, a Chilean, will promote the DESERTEC concept across the world and in particular in South America with a view to developing a South American DESERTEC initiative.
“I am very much looking forward to this new challenge,” said Campino. “I have followed the activities of the DESERTEC Foundation from the beginning. As a Chilean and a lover of the Atacama Desert, I could immediately imagine using the desert sun to generate power. And I am very happy to be able to contribute to spreading this idea in the desert regions of the Earth.”
In his work with Deutsche Telekom over the past 17 years Campino was involved in the United Nations process to reach a global agreement on the reduction of CO2 emissions, and he took part in almost all of the UN climate conferences.
The DESERTEC concept is based on developing the renewable energy potential, particularly solar energy, of the desert regions in the world, along with HV DC transmission lines to transmit the power to end users. The initial focus region is the Middle East and North Africa.
