Ed’s note: Returning from DTECH 2019

Some of the Smart Energy International team were in New Orleans last week to attend the annual Distributech conference and exhibition and have come back exhausted, but also excited that we have had the opportunity to renew friendships and forge new connections.

I was particularly pleased to have had the opportunity to conduct a number of interviews at the Clarion Power and Energy studio. I was delighted to have had the opportunity to speak with Philip Mezey, Itron CEO and President, who recently announced his impending retirement from the company.

In addition, I spoke with Terence Donnelly, VP and COO for ComEd, who shared the challenges facing utilities operating in the Northern parts of the US, which were recently subject to temperatures that hit historic lows due to a polar vortex.

I was also joined by Roberto Zangrandi, Secretary General for the European distribution system operators association, EDSO. Zangrandi shared the need for European and North American companies and utilities to work together, collaborate and learn from one another in this rapidly changing landscape. He also spoke about the implementation of the New Energy Package in Europe and the impact on DSOs as well as their changing role in the energy landscape.

All of these interviews, along with many others undertaken during the three day event, will be available on Smart Energy International and our partner channels over the next couple of weeks and we encourage you to watch, comment on and share these insights with your colleagues and network.

As always, we look forward to hearing from you, our reader. We are always interested in receiving story ideas and pitches and invite you to submit these to editorial@smart-energy.com. Commercial opportunities can be discussed with Errol Bryce.

Until next time!
