Latin American utilities select AMI systems


São Paulo, Brazil and Quito, Ecuador — (METERING.COM) — August 23, 2012 – In recent days two Latin American utilities have been named as selecting AMI vendors – Brazilian utility CPFL Energia selecting Itron for the supply of 20,000 smart meters and Ecuador’s Corporacion Nacional de Electricidad (CNEL) selecting Elster’s EnergyAxis system.

CPFL’s smart metering system, which is focused initially on commercial and industrial clients, will also include a meter data collection system and support services, in addition to the latest generation SL 7000 meter. CPFL is installing the meters and expects to complete the implementation of the project in 2013. After installation, the Itron meters will be integrated with CPFL’s eMeter EnergyIP(R) meter data management and billing systems.

The initial phase of CNEL‘s deployment will include more than 15,000 endpoints and more than 900 LV AGInodes(TM) to monitor distribution transformers in Manta, Puerto Viejo and Machala, three cities located within Manabi and El Oro, two of CNEL’s regional distribution companies. The installation will eventually include other CNEL regional distribution companies, which include Esmeraldas, Santa Elena, Milagro, Guayas-Los Rios, Los Rios, Bolivar, Santo Domingo and Sucumbios.
