São Paulo, Brazil — (METERING.COM) — October 26, 2009 – The winners of the Smart Energy International’s Latin American Excellence Awards for 2009 were announced at the 7th Metering, Billing/CRM Latin America last week.

In the advanced metering category the winner was Sabesp, the water utility of São Paulo, for its Telemedição advanced meter reading project. The project was initiated to address a range of issues, including customer communication and leakage and fraud detection, with a focus on the 3,880 large customers accounting for approximately 20 percent of the company’s billing (R$82 million or US$47 million). Among the results, the system has led to savings of around 732,000 m3/year of water – sufficient to supply 14,000 people for a year.

In the revenue protection category the winner was the Rio Grande utility RGE (part of the CPFL Energia group) for its project “technology applied to revenue protection.” The project, which was initiated in early 2005, has involved the development of a smartphone-based application (initially Palm, later changed to Windows Mobile) as well as other modules for the company’s management system for the management of revenue protection activities in the field. From January 2005 to August 2009, more than 0.5 million field inspections were managed electronically through the system, resulting in the detection of more than 80,000 metering irregularities.

In the customer service category the winner was CELG, the state-owned utility of Goiás, for its commercial management system CELG-Billing. CELG-Billing is a modern open architecture management system integrating customer relationship and care, billing, collection, accounting and meter management, with the CRM module forming the key pillar of the solution, enabling the various customer processes to be streamlined and automated. With around 2.75 million customer interactions in the call center per annum the mean time of service is 3.2 minutes.
