The Smart Energy Alliance™ (SEA) has launched two new metering solutions as part of a suite of offerings aimed at assisting the global utility industry to accelerate the adoption of next-generation distribution technologies.
The smart metering solution comprises a two-way network to automatically collect data from energy meters. In this solution data is transferred to a central database over a common network, in order to enable more advanced capabilities such as prepaid metering, distribution Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and smart meter agents. In this way the solution can help reduce cost of meter reads, eliminate ‘hard to read’, missed reads and inaccurate reads, improve theft detection, provide faster and accurate billing for rate payer and utility, and improve tax and government reporting.
The distribution SCADA solution utilises Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and other grid agent data points to enable improved awareness of the distribution grid health and operational management (O&M). With two-way communication data from meters and agents providing a near real-time view of the distribution grid, utilities can provide faster response to network outages, reduce O&M costs, increase network reliability and reduce regulatory penalties.
The Smart Energy Alliance is a collaboration between Capgemini, HP, Intel, Cisco, Oracle and GE focusing on solution development, field services engagement and industry marketing around a business vision of next-generation distribution.
