Water meters to be read remotely

Water MeterPortland, ME, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — October 4, 2006 – The Portland Water District in the state of Maine has begun a two-year project to replace 49,000 water meters with devices that can be read remotely, using drive-by radio.

The meter replacement will be handled by VSI Meter Services; AMCO Water Metering Systems is supplying the meters themselves. While the Maine Public Utilities Commission requires meter replacement every eight years, Portland Water District received an extension to 15 years as it researched automatic reading technology. The utility says that the PUC will require replacement of the news meters after 15 years in the field.
