Will the electric industry in Fiji be deregulated?

Suva, Fiji — (METERING.COM) — June 14, 2007 – A call to regulate the electric industry in the islands of Fiji in the South Pacific has been made by that country’s Chamber of Commerce. At present the Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) is both supplying power to island residents as a monopoly, and undertaking regulatory functions on behalf of the government – something they would prefer not to do, as they are not receiving payment for their regulatory activities.

The Chamber is lobbying for an independent regulator, saying that the monopoly position of the FEA is of concern to the business community. It has approached the interim government in this regard, with the support of the FEA.
